Writing

Notes from the practice

Positions I have argued for often enough that writing them down is cheaper than repeating them. Mostly about design systems, forms, and the gap between what a process claims to produce and what it produces.

A design system that ends in a build pipeline

Most design systems stop at the Figma library. That is the point at which they become a document instead of a system, and the reason a colour change takes a week.

The blueprint is for the argument, not the wall

Service blueprints get made, printed, admired and ignored. The value was never the artefact — it was that the artefact forces a specific argument to happen out loud.

Forms are legislation with a text field

Why government form design is not really form design, and what changes when you accept that every field is downstream of an instrument somebody has to enforce.

Accessibility belongs at the token layer

Auditing components for contrast is treating the symptom. If the palette can express an inaccessible pair, someone will eventually ship it.
